Katy Perry..........................Katy Perry original name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, (born October 25 1984 Santa Barbara California U.S.) American pop singer who gained fame for a string of anthemic and often sexually suggestive hit songs as well as for a playfully cartoonish sense of style. Perry's initial attempts at becoming famous in the mainstream were unsuccessful. She had been signed to two different recording companies, but was dropped before she released any songs. Capitol Records released Perry's Ur So Gay EP in 2007, which received little attention for its jolly humorous track. The song I kissed a Girl a straightforward ode that expresses sexual desire accompanied by an electro-pop beat that was hardedged caused her to make a bigger splash within a couple of months. It quickly sparked controversy as some critics derided the song for encouraging sexual relations between gays and lesbians while others claimed that the explicit scenario it depicted catered to male fantasies of sexuality among females. I Kissed a Girl, a combination of titillation coupled with a refined melody helped I Kissed a Girl to become a hit number one in a variety of countries, and to drive sales of her 2008 album, One of the Boys. Its bouncy, sharp-tongued and bouncy second single Hot N Cold also proving to be a hit, the album which Perry wrote herself eventually registered sales of more than three million copies within the United States.
